Mangu History and Culture Park (망우역사문화공원)

The cemetery of korean independence fighters as a ‘cultural and historical landmark’

Jungnang-gu is constantly growing flowers and plants to create Mangu History and Culture Park, a popular destination for flower lovers. This location became known as Manguri Cemetery. This is because there is a gravesite for nine independence fighters who gave their lives for their country during the Japanese colonial period, including martyrs Yu Gwan-sun and Han Yong-un. Its location on the outskirts of Seoul made it difficult for citizens to find.

Accordingly, efforts are being made to transform the area into a cultural and historical attraction by creating a responsible department starting in 2021. Last year, they planted lilac and spirea trees, and this year, they planted cherry trees and poppies.

In addition, convenience for citizens was increased by operating an exhibition hall and a gallery cafe inside the park to publicize the graves of independence fighters. An official from Jungnang-gu explained, “You can enjoy a variety of colorful spring flowers such as forsythia, lilac, cornelian cherry, and cherry blossoms, along with the feeling of a dense forest that you can get from Mangusan Mountain.”

Accessibility was also improved by operating a free shuttle bus between nearby subway stations and the park. Since last year, Jungnang-gu has been operating a shuttle bus 19 times a day connecting Mangu History and Culture Park, Jungnang Camping Forest, and Yangwon Station. Ryu Gyeong-gi, mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, “We will spread the word about Mangu History and Culture Park and make it a high-quality history, culture, and art space that inherits the valuable spirit of great people.”

Here is a link to the official site with information about the park and shuttle buses.

Cherry blossoms festivals at Seokchon Lake, Seoul

Songpa-gu will hold the ‘Seokchon Lake Flower Festival’ from the 27th to the 31st of this month. This year, the district also created the Jamsil Lake Bridge Observation Rest Area on Jamsil Lake Bridge, the starting point of Songpa-daero. An official from Songpa-gu said, “We installed glass railings and landscape lighting on the lake bridge, which was previously deserted and featureless, so that people could enjoy the scenery of the lake and the beautiful night view at the same time.” And he added, “Citizens who visited Seokchon Lake will walk along the cherry blossom road, which naturally leads to Garak Market.” “We plan to make it happen,” he said.

Bulgwangcheon Cherry Blossom Festival

Eunpyeong-gu will hold the Bulgwangcheon Cherry Blossom Festival ‘Eunpyeong Spring’ for three days in the Bulgwangcheon area from the 4th to the 6th of next month. At Eunpyeong’s Spring Festival, you can enjoy a variety of cultural events while walking along the Bulgwangcheon Cherry Blossom Road. During the festival, performances by invited singers and traditional cultural arts performances will be held on a special floating stage. Eunpyeong-gu plans to provide ‘Eunpyeong-gu 1st row viewing tickets’ as a gift to 50 people on a first-come, first-served basis by linking tickets to this festival with the Hometown Love Donation System.

Dongdaemun Flower Bloom

Dongdaemun-gu will also hold the spring flower festival ‘Flower Bloom’ for two days starting on the 30th of this month, centered around the Jangan Cherry Blossom Road. Photo zones and nighttime landscape lighting were installed throughout the approximately 5 km-long Jangan Cherry Blossom Road. During the festival, various programs are offered, including a flea market, food trucks, and a children’s playground. On the second day of the festival, the 31st, a ‘Turtle Marathon’ competition will also be held.

An official from Dongdaemun-gu said, “We expect that this festival’s marathon will become a place of integration for disabled and non-disabled people to walk and mingle together,” and added, “We will thoroughly conduct everything from safety management to event operation so that residents can happily enjoy the spring flower festival in Dongdaemun-gu, the city of flowers.” “I will prepare,” he said.
