Weather in Hanoi in every 12 months

The weather in Hanoi has a mild subtropical climate. Outside of the rainy season from May to September, it rains frequently, so an umbrella is essential no matter when you leave. Spring (March–April) and fall (October–November) are the best times to travel to Hanoi, with refreshing and warm weather.

Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam, is known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and bustling streets. Situated in the northern part of the country, Hanoi boasts charming colonial architecture, serene lakes, and delicious cuisine. Visitors can explore historic landmarks like the Hoan Kiem Lake, the Old Quarter, and the imposing Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. With its blend of tradition and modernity, Hanoi offers a captivating experience for travelers seeking to immerse themselves in Vietnamese heritage.

January and February

Dry and chilly winter weather
But of course, it is warmer than the winter in the typical Northern Hemisphere temperate climate. It would be a mistake to think that just because it has a tropical climate. You can only wear short-sleeved clothes in January and February. It is a good idea to prepare for the cold at night and early in the morning by wearing long-sleeved clothes and warm padding.

January
Average temperature: 14℃/20℃
Average precipitation: 22.7㎜/2 days

February
Average temperature: 16℃/21℃
Average precipitation: 16.6 mm/3 days

March to April

Dry and refreshing spring
The cold of winter is gone and it is a perfect spring day for travel. The weather is perfect for walking with short-sleeved clothes and a light coat. It’s still a little chilly at night. It rains often, but it’s only lightly scattered so you don’t have to worry about it. From the end of April, precipitation increases.

March
Average temperature: 18°C/23°C
Average precipitation: 43mm/6 days

April
Average temperature: 22℃/28℃
Average precipitation: 60.3 mm/5 days

May, June

beginning of the rainy season

May is the month when the rainy season begins in Hanoi. As the southwest monsoon blows, precipitation gradually increases. The sun is very strong between showers, so be sure to bring a hat and sunscreen. For shoes, cool sandals are recommended.

In May
Average temperature: 24℃/32℃
Average precipitation: 133.8㎜/7 days

June
Average temperature: 26℃/34℃
Average precipitation: 162.6㎜/8 days

July, August

Hot and sticky midsummer
It is midsummer, the rainiest and hottest time of the year. In addition, Hanoi is surrounded by large and small lakes, so the humidity is very high. I recommend spending most of your time at a well-equipped resort or focusing your activities indoors with air conditioning. This is the time of year when you sweat a lot, so prepare cool, breathable summer clothes, sandals, and extra underwear.

In July
Average temperature: 26℃/33℃
Average precipitation: 178㎜/8 days

August
Average temperature: 26℃/33℃
Average precipitation: 184.6㎜/8 days

September, October

A good fall day to travel
After the long rainy season, precipitation gradually decreases in October, ushering in a refreshing autumn. There are still many rainy days, but after the squall showers stop, clear weather continues. The weather is good for outdoor activities, as it is not too cold at night and the wind is cool. It is enough to prepare cool summer clothes and thin, long sleeves to wear in the morning and evening.

September
Average temperature: 25℃/32℃
Average precipitation: 109.1㎜/5 days

October

Average temperature: 22°C/29°C
Average precipitation: 77.4 mm/4 days

November, December

beginning of winter
As the northeast monsoon blows, winter begins in Hanoi. Precipitation will decrease and relatively dry and chilly weather will continue. Since there is no indoor heating, the perceived temperature is lower than the actual temperature. Prepare long-sleeved clothes and a light coat, and refer to the weather forecast to bring padding for inter-seasonal use.

November
Average temperature: 19℃/26℃
Average precipitation: 40.7㎜/2 days

December
Average temperature: 15℃/22℃
Average precipitation: 16.8㎜/day
